The Offices of Elder and Deacon in the RCA
Deacons and Elders: Now that you’re elected and ordained, what do you do, and why?
This course offers two free Zoom sessions for elders and deacons. Those answering God’s call to the office of elder or deacon—whether newly ordained or experienced—will find roots in the scripture itself as well as in all three “legs” of the Constitution of the RCA (Standards of Unity, Book of Church Order, and Liturgy).
The first session will combine both elders and deacons so that they will become familiar with the differences between the offices and how they work cooperatively as a consistory to the glory of God and for the life of the church.
In the second session, elders and deacons will meet separately to focus on their particular responsibilities. We will learn from discussions and experiences of service, witness, and prayer.
The first session for deacons and elders jointly will meet on Zoom 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. For elders and deacons who cannot attend, a repeat of this first session will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
A second session for elders will meet on Zoom 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
A second session for deacons will meet on Zoom 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.
A syllabus will be sent to elders and deacons who register for these free sessions.
