As our nation celebrates 250 years of American independence, the Reformed Church in America gives thanks to God for its faithful ministry since 1628.
The Classis of New York and the Regional Synod of New York mark a significant milestone in the life and witness of the Reformed Church in America. In 1628, Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam (now New York City) gathered in a mill loft to celebrate their first formal communion. This sacred gathering gave rise to what would become the Collegiate Churches of New York, recognized as the oldest continuous Christian congregation in North America, faithfully participating in the breaking of bread of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We also remember the historic struggle for religious freedom in 1776, when Protestant Christians, among others, stood in protest for the right to worship freely. This witness of faith by people of various denominations helped inspire the Founding Fathers to guarantee religious liberty in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Throughout history, many have borne witness to the growth of the Church in this nation. We acknowledge both the richness of God’s work through the Church and the sacrifices made in the pursuit of justice and equality for all of God’s people.
The Regional Synod of New York gives thanks to God for the opportunities for ministry and mission within its bounds. We remain committed to fostering inclusivity and equality among all congregations within the Classis and beyond. As we gather at the Lord’s Table, we continue to be guided by the Word of God, remaining faithful to Christ’s call in every generation.
Prayerfully
Rev. Dr. Micheal Edwards, Executive Minister
