“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
As we enter the New Year, I am reminded of the Apostle Paul’s call to the early church to live with gratitude—even amid challenge and uncertainty. Thanksgiving lies at the heart of our faith, acknowledging God as the source of all blessings and trusting in God’s steadfast love as we proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ.
I am deeply grateful for the Restructuring Committee Team for their voluntary commitment of time, prayer, and thoughtful discernment as they worked faithfully to clarify proposed applications grounded in our core values. As a member of COSE (Council of Synod Executives), I continue to hear the struggles many regions face in holding healthy, Christ-centered conversations. I urge us all to pray and seek God’s guidance, trusting that God can transform even the most difficult situations into blessings.
As RCA classes carry out the structural changes approved by General Synod, I pray that consistories and classis members remain focused on Christ and engage in productive dialogue around the development of the Middle Assembly. I am thankful for the classes that have invited me to listen and share perspectives during this important season of discernment.
I continue to urge caution against closing churches based solely on financial indicators. While many congregations face real challenges, I believe consistories are being called to seek innovative ways of gathering and engaging new communities. Adaptive reuse of church buildings offers creative opportunities for renewed ministry and community presence.
I also give thanks for the ministry of Christian education, especially through Vacation Bible School programs and camping ministries. These programs provide meaningful faith formation for children and youth, particularly during the summer months. It is my hope that classes and Middle Assemblies will find ways to sustain these vital ministries, even amid limited funding.
Our RSNY office continues to assist consistories in identifying ministers, recognizing the many challenges pastors face in faithful service. As we prepare reports for General Synod 2026, clear communication remains essential. Classes are reminded to share synod actions and decisions with consistories and mission partners.
Looking ahead, we will gather on May 2, 2026, at the Reformed Church of Tarrytown to celebrate and give thanks for the faithfulness of the Synod of New York.
As we move forward, may we do so with gratitude, humility, prayer, and trust in God—who brings unity and new life out of every challenge.
