Music Director Job Description

Purpose: The purpose of the Music Director is to help the members of the congregation grow as disciples of Jesus Christ through worship and music. The music director is an independent contractor and not an employee of the Japanese American United Church.

Job Title: Music Director

Denomination: The United Methodist Church & Reformed Church in America

Church Size: 60‐70 worshippers on Sunday, including Sunday school

Sunday Worship Services: 11am, Japanese & English bilingual service

Hours: Part Time (9:30 am to 12:30 or 1:00 pm on Sundays + preparation time)

Salary: $175 per week (Negotiable)

Insurance: Not provided

Start Date: Earliest possible start is July 1, 2018 (No relocation assistance provided)



Sunday Worship Service:

  • Preparing/practicing for Sunday worship services
  • Music selection (work with the pastor who oversees hymn selections)
  • Inform office staff of music selections for the weekly bulletin

Special Services

  • During Lent, Holy Week, and Christmas Eve


  • Preparing/rehearsing /directing the Choir for Sunday worship and special musical offerings
  • Rehearsals on Sunday mornings before the Worship Service
  • Nurture participation of current members; recruit and train new choir members


  • BA degree in music, or current college student majoring in music; or at least 3-years of experience directing a church or community choir
  • Familiarity with Christian worship services; can play both traditional and contemporary hymns
  • Patient and has positive communication skills for both choir members and the congregation
  • Fluency in both Japanese and English is an asset but not required
  • Must have valid authorization to work in the U.S.
